Home On The Range

Post by Mike Neer »

I’ve been preparing to wrap up my series on chord melody playing, and I am focusing on using one or two classic tunes to demonstrate several approaches. Yesterday I came up with a quick but difficult arrangement of Home On The Range using open voiced triads, which I think offers a really nice almost hymn-like sound. This is just one of the approaches I am using. Also, this is plain vanilla C6 tuning: ECAG ECAG, or as I like to say ECAGx2

If you’re interested in this kind of stuff, check out A Different Slant. You would have to register to check it out at steelinstruction.com, but it’s free.

Thanks, Marshall. I am big fan of this sound (not the tone, I mean the voicings).

I have to be honest, I don’t think I ever really listened to that recording, at least attentively. HOTR is not a tune I would ever been particularly interested in, but over the past year or so I am recalling tunes that we learned in childhood from the American folk canon, and so when I was thinking of a tune that would be a perfect slate to start with, it was one of the first to come to mind. Crazy!
